May 7 @ 10:00 am - June 2 @ 4:00 pm

An upcoming exhibition of artworks featuring nudes will appeal to our inquisitive nature and promises to deliver delight to patrons of the Cessnock Regional Art Gallery. ‘Starkers’ is a group show including the work of local Hunter Valley artists and Sydney-based artists, featuring the spontaneous images produced in recent life drawing classes in the local gallery and in the Camelart Club life drawing sessions at the Camelot Lounge in Sydney. The exhibition has been curated by Judy Robinson, a new volunteer at the Cessnock Regional Art Gallery, whose work won the Cessnock LGA Acquisitive Prize in the 2018 Hunter Valley Spring Art Fair.

Artworks in ‘Starkers’ include oil and acrylic paintings on canvas, as well as framed charcoal, graphite, art pen and pastel sketches on rag and paper. Negotiations are underway to include electronic and sculptural works in the exhibition. The exhibition will feature the work of local artists, including Nancy Gray, Katrina Rose, Janine Matthews and Judy Robinson, as well as the that of Sydney artists, including Anna Trengove, Annette Rays, Anthony Davis, Janice Gullick, and Neil Phillips. All works will be for sale during the exhibition, which runs from Tuesday 7TH May to Sunday 2ND June, 2019.

Neil Phillips, psychiatrist and exhibiting artist, has a long-held interest in evolutionary psychology, and will give a talk at the opening party on Saturday 11th May at 2:00PM. Neil will discuss our curiosity about the naked human form and its place in art history, beginning with the 350,000 (+) year old Venus of Tan Tan sculpture, known as the earliest image of the naked female form.
