Constable Estate Vineyard
Constable Estate is located at Pokolbin, a pristine, picturesque spot in the heart of NSW. A leading destination, our boutique vineyard is renowned for producing exceptional examples of the wine for which this region is well known.
205 Gillards Road, Pokolbin
The estate is home to the Constable family, who have landscaped an awe-inspiring garden containing many unique sculptures. Cradled against the magnificent Brokenback Ranges within this world famous wine region, Constable Estate’s boutique charm has earned a reputation as one of the most beautiful and successful vineyards in Australia.
In 1963, David Constable went to Wee Waa to attend a board meeting of a cotton plantation he and some friends had recently acquired. One of his associates, who flew up in his own plane, experienced engine problems on the return journey to Sydney and was forced to land at Cessnock Airport. After renting a car and looking at nearby vineyards, he became convinced that wine could be a more interesting investment than cotton. Subsequently, the same group purchased a 323-hectare farm owned by dairyman Alan Hungerford. This became Hungerford Hill, a vineyard listed on the Sydney Stock Exchange. The company quickly expanded, and was proud to introduce Australia’s first ‘bag in the box’ wine.
Nineteen years later, in early 1982, David was in London with his wife Ida when he received a telephone call notifying him that Hungerford Hill was selling some property – three blocks of approximately 15 hectares. Sight unseen, he decided to purchase one in partnership with his long term friend, Michael Hershon. Later that year, David returned to Australia and began the process of transforming the 15 hectare site from a vacant block with several ailing vines into the beautiful property now known as Constable Estate.
