The land grant for Peacock Hill dates back to the 1840’s. Orginally farmland, it is now one of the Hunter’s most picturesque boutique vineyards with Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc vines planted c1968, Chardonnay c1984 and more Shiraz in 1995. A very run down property in 1995 (when purchased by George and Silvi), the vines have been rejuvenated and retrellised and in-line drip irrigation has been installed. An environmentally soft approach to vineyard management was instigated in 1995 and now an abundance of wallabies, kangaroos, birdlife, frogs and lizards continue to thrive alongside the vines. A grass mat is maintained between the vine rows as a means of minimising water and wind erosion, as a food source for local wildlife and as instant nutrient when mowed. All vines are hand pruned, fruit is hand picked with attention to detail and quality paramount in order to provide optimum quality fruit for the wine making process. All wines are handcrafted and, where used, only superior quality French and American oak barrels are purchased. The reputation of Peacock Hill is in each bottle.
Production ranges from approx 100 cases – 800 cases of each style to a maximum of 2500 cases in total annually.
The artwork on our label is a depiction of the view from our home, across our vines toward Brokenback Range and was painted by local artist Chris Fussel. Our 20 years at Peacock Hill can be seen in the evolution of our label but always maintaining the beautiful view/colours of the Hunter.
